What size wall art should go above a sofa?

A simple rule for sizing wall art above a sofa or bed, with a size chart for common sofa and bed widths and tips on hanging height.

The most common mistake with wall art is buying it too small. A piece that looks big in the box can look like a postage stamp once it is on the wall above a full-size sofa. The good news is that one simple rule solves most of it.

The two-thirds rule

Wall art above a piece of furniture should be about two-thirds to three-quarters as wide as the furniture. That leaves some wall showing on each side, so the art feels connected to the sofa below it instead of floating on its own or crowding the room.

To use it, measure the width of your sofa (or bed, sideboard or console) and multiply by 0.66 and by 0.75. Anything between the two results will look balanced.

Size chart

Furniture Typical width Art width that looks right
Loveseat 60 in (152 cm) 40–45 in (100–115 cm)
Three-seat sofa 84 in (213 cm) 55–63 in (140–160 cm)
Large sofa 96 in (244 cm) 63–72 in (160–183 cm)
Full bed 54 in (137 cm) 36–40 in (90–100 cm)
Queen bed 60 in (152 cm) 40–45 in (100–115 cm)
King bed 76 in (193 cm) 50–57 in (127–145 cm)
Console or sideboard 48 in (122 cm) 32–36 in (80–90 cm)

Our designs come in sizes from 10 to 59 inches (25 to 150 cm) on the longest side. For a large sofa where the chart suggests more than 59 inches, go for the largest size, or hang two related pieces side by side with a 3–4 inch gap between them.

Round, wide or tall?

The rule is about width, but the shape of the design matters too:

  • Wide designs, such as city skylines and mountain ranges, suit long sofas and beds best. They fill the width without towering over the room.
  • Round designs look smaller than their size suggests, because there is less steel at the corners. Size them up one step.
  • Tall designs work better on narrow walls, beside a doorway or above a slim console, than over a long sofa.

How high to hang it

Leave 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the art. Above a bed, measure from the top of the headboard instead.

On a wall without furniture, such as a hallway, hang the piece so its centre is about 57 to 60 inches (145 to 152 cm) from the floor. That is roughly eye level for most people, and it is the height many galleries use.

Try it before you order

Cut a piece of paper or cardboard to the size you are considering, or mark the outline on the wall with painter’s tape. Leave it up for a day. It is the easiest way to see whether a smaller size is enough, or whether you need the next one up.

When you know your size, our guide on how to hang metal wall art explains the three mounting options you can choose when you order.
