Black, white, gold, silver or bronze: choosing a metal wall art finish
How to choose between black, white, gold, silver and bronze powder-coated finishes for steel wall art, based on wall colour, room style and light.
Every design in our shop comes in five powder-coated finishes. The design is the same in each, but the finish changes how loud it is, how warm it feels and how much of its shadow you see. Here is how to choose.
Start with contrast
The single most important thing is contrast with the wall. Steel art is a silhouette: if it is close in colour to the wall behind it, the design gets lost.
| Wall colour | Finishes that stand out |
|---|---|
| White, cream, light grey | Black, bronze, gold |
| Mid grey, beige, sage | Black, white, gold |
| Dark grey, navy, green, black | White, gold, silver |
| Wood panelling, exposed brick | Black, gold |
Black
The classic, and the most graphic. Black reads clearly from across a room and makes every cut in the design sharp. It suits modern, industrial, Scandinavian and farmhouse rooms alike. If you can’t decide, black on a light wall is almost never wrong.
White
White is quieter on a light wall — more texture than contrast — and very striking on a dark one, where it can look almost like a chalk drawing. On a dark wall it is the best choice for detailed designs.
Gold
Gold adds warmth and a little glamour. It works well in Art Deco, mid-century and traditional rooms and next to brass lamps, mirrors and taps. Gold is also a classic choice for Christmas designs, where it catches candle and string light.
Silver
Silver feels cool, clean and modern. Pair it with chrome, glass, concrete and grey textiles. It suits city skylines and geometric designs especially well.
Bronze
Bronze sits between black and gold: dark enough to stand out on a light wall, warm enough to blend with wood and leather. It is a natural fit for cabins and lodges and for rooms with a lot of natural material.
Think about the light
Powder coating gives a smooth, even surface. In a room with strong side light, any finish casts a crisp shadow when the piece is hung on the floating hanger. In a dim room, the lighter finishes (white, gold, silver) stay visible longer into the evening.
Indoors and outdoors
All five finishes are powder coated. For outdoor use, the mounting option matters more than the colour: choose mounting holes, as explained in our hanging guide.
